Five small signs your home has a hidden leak

The dramatic stuff is easy to spot. It is the slow drips and quiet pressure drops that quietly cost the most.

Plumber inspecting a pipe joint

You don’t need a flooded floor to have a serious leak. Most of the jobs we are called to in Kuala Lumpur involve water that has been moving inside walls or under tiles for weeks before anyone noticed. The good news is that homes do drop hints — you just need to know what to look for.

1. The water meter creeps when nothing is running

Walk to your meter at night, after everyone has stopped using water. Note the digits. Don’t use anything for an hour. If the reading has moved at all, water is leaving the system somewhere. Tiny movements (under 1 litre) usually point to a slow drip or a worn flush valve. Larger ones mean a real leak — call us.

2. Pressure drop that “just happened”

If the shower suddenly feels weaker, or the kitchen tap takes longer to fill a kettle, it is rarely the utility’s fault. More often it is a leak somewhere in your home letting water out before it reaches the fixture. Especially common in older terrace homes with galvanised pipework.

3. A patch of wall paint that won’t stop peeling

You re-paint, it looks fine for a week, then it starts to bubble again. That patch is almost always sitting in front of a leaking pipe, even if the surface feels dry to the touch. Humidity in the wall is just as damaging as a visible drip.

4. Mould that comes back no matter what you spray

Bathrooms in Malaysia will always have a little mould — humidity is what it is. But if a specific corner keeps growing mould after every cleaning, look for a moisture source. Showers that drain slowly, hidden pipe leaks, and failed waterproofing membranes are the usual suspects.

5. A sudden spike in your water bill

Compare your last bill to the same month last year. A 30%+ increase that isn’t explained by extra family members, more cooking, or longer showers is almost always a hidden leak. Don’t wait for next month to confirm — call early, and the repair stays small.
